Buying guidance

Choose the tape for the job

Choose application tape by the vinyl, release liner, graphic size, detail and installation method. Medium-tack paper, high-tack paper and low-tack clear film are not interchangeable. Test the selected tape with the actual vinyl and surface before production.

Conform 4050 RLA: medium-tack paper

For many medium and large cut-vinyl graphics, fleet lettering and banners.

Conform 4075 RLA: high-tack paper

For smaller lettering, detailed graphics and vinyl that is harder to lift from its liner. Excessive tack can make installation and tape removal difficult.

Clear Choice AT60N: low-tack clear film

Transparent film helps with positioning large graphics and compatible printed material. Test the specific vinyl, print, liner and application method.

Block Out Tape 2000: screen-printing tape

For blocking out compatible screen-printing frames. This is not transfer tape for cut-vinyl graphics.

Application-tape questions

Are application tape and transfer tape the same thing?

The terms application tape and transfer tape are commonly used for the same product. The tape temporarily holds weeded vinyl lettering or graphics in position while they are transferred from the release liner to the application surface.

What is the difference between medium-tack and high-tack application tape?

Medium-tack application tape works for many standard cut-vinyl graphics and larger lettering. High-tack tape provides stronger pickup for smaller details, textured films or vinyl that is difficult to remove from its release liner. The correct tack depends on the vinyl, liner, graphic size and application surface.

Should I use paper or clear application tape?

Paper application tape is conformable, easy to tear and commonly used for professional sign-vinyl installation. Clear-film transfer tape allows the graphic and application surface to remain visible, which can help with alignment and layering. The correct choice depends on the vinyl and installation method.

Why will application tape not pick up the vinyl from its liner?

The tape may have insufficient tack, the tape may not have been firmly squeegeed to the vinyl, or the vinyl may be holding tightly to its release liner. Small details and textured films may require a higher-tack product. Test the tape and vinyl together before processing a large job.

Why is application tape difficult to remove after installing the vinyl?

The tape may have more tack than the application requires, or the vinyl may not have developed sufficient adhesion to the surface. Surface contamination, low temperature and excessive removal speed can also cause problems. Use the proper tack level and follow the vinyl manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Can application tape be used for wet vinyl installation?

Wet-application compatibility depends on the vinyl, application tape and installation fluid. Moisture can affect paper tape and certain adhesives. Confirm that the complete system is suitable for wet installation before applying the graphic.

What is RTape Block Out Tape 2000 used for?

RTape Block Out Tape 2000 is used to cover open areas, registration marks and unused portions of screen-printing frames. It is a screen-printing product and is not intended to transfer cut-vinyl graphics.
