Frequently Asked Questions About Choosing Sign Materials
What is the difference between cast and calendered sign vinyl?
Cast vinyl is generally thinner, more conformable and better suited to long-term graphics, curved surfaces and demanding applications. Calendered vinyl is commonly used for flat or moderately curved surfaces, general signage, decals and shorter- to medium-term applications.
Which sign vinyl should I use for general signs and decals?
Intermediate calendered vinyl, such as FDC Lumina 4200, is a practical choice for many general signs, decals and flat-surface applications. The correct material depends on the surface, expected outdoor life, installation conditions and whether the graphic must conform to curves.
Which sign vinyl should I use for long-term or demanding applications?
Cast vinyl, such as FDC Lumina 2100, is generally preferred for long-term graphics and applications requiring better conformability. High-performance calendered products such as Metamark M7 may also be suitable, depending on the surface and required durability.
Should digital print media be used with a laminate?
A laminate is recommended when printed graphics need additional protection from sunlight, moisture, abrasion, chemicals or frequent handling. The print media, ink system, laminate and intended application should be evaluated together to ensure compatibility.
What sign substrates are available?
Great Lakes Graphic Supply carries sign substrates including aluminum, corrugated plastic and PVC in selected sizes and thicknesses. Availability varies, so call 1-800-477-6275 to confirm the material and size needed for your project.
Can Great Lakes Graphic Supply help me choose the correct material?
Yes. Explain the surface, expected lifespan, indoor or outdoor exposure, printing method and installation requirements. Great Lakes Graphic Supply can help compare suitable vinyl, print media, laminate, substrate and application-supply options.
