Transfer Tape Calculator

Transfer tape yield calculator

Estimate complete rectangular applications from identical rolls. Compare two uniform orientations before choosing a cut plan. Default inputs are examples, not listed product specifications.

Use positive decimal dimensions (up to 18 whole-number digits and 12 decimal places). Allowance may be zero. Quantity must be a positive whole number of up to 18 digits. Use a decimal point, not a comma; fractions and exponents are not accepted.

Roll dimensions
Allowance

Allowance is added to every edge: twice the allowance is added to both graphic dimensions.

How to interpret this estimate

Uniform rectangular grids only, with one orientation per comparison and identical, separate rolls. No mixed-orientation nesting, splicing, cutting gaps, setup loss, defects or reuse of side strips is modeled. Separate roll tails cannot be combined. Add your own suitable allowance; confirm orientation and material compatibility before cutting. This is not a purchase recommendation.

Cut-plan lengths are in inches and areas in square inches. Fractions are shown exactly; for example, 1/2 means one-half inch. Unused area inside consumed length is not a continuous usable tail.

Manual calculation (no JavaScript needed)

Use the valid dimensions, quantity and allowance described above. Work in inches for lengths and square inches for areas. Round down or up only where stated, to a whole number; exact whole numbers stay unchanged.

  1. Convert every length, including allowance, to inches: multiply feet by 12 or yards by 36; divide millimeters by 25.4 or centimeters by 2.54. Keep conversion fractions exact. Do not round a near-boundary measurement to make it fit. Fractions may be used in manual arithmetic, but cannot be entered in the form.
  2. For the original orientation, application width = graphic width + 2 × allowance per edge; application length = graphic height + 2 × allowance per edge. Width runs across the roll; length runs along the roll.
  3. Applications across = roll width ÷ application width, rounded down. Full rows per roll = roll length ÷ application length, rounded down.
  4. Complete applications per full roll = applications across × full rows per roll. If either count is zero, this orientation does not fit; stop this comparison instead of dividing by zero.
  5. Rolls required = quantity ÷ complete applications per full roll, rounded up. Fill each roll to that capacity until the remaining quantity fits on the last roll. Calculate the following lengths and area separately for each roll, using the number of applications assigned to that roll.
  6. Consumed length = (applications on this roll ÷ applications across, rounded up) × application length. A partly filled row still consumes a full row of length. Continuous tail = roll length − consumed length.
  7. Unused area within consumed length = (roll width × consumed length) − (applications on this roll × application width × application length). Application area includes the allowance. This unused area is not an extra continuous tail and is not counted as additional complete applications. Keep separate roll tails separate.
  8. Repeat with graphic width and height swapped for the 90-degree orientation, adding the same allowance to both dimensions. Compare the two separate uniform cut plans; do not mix orientations within a plan. Geometric fit does not establish material compatibility. All estimate limitations above still apply.

Worked example: allowance and a partial last roll

Example only, not a product specification: graphic 4 × 3 in; allowance 0.5 in per edge; quantity 13; identical rolls 12 in wide × 20 in long.

Original orientation

Application 5 × 4 in: 2 across × 5 full rows = 10 complete applications per full roll; 2 rolls required.

First roll: 10 applications; consumed length 20 in; continuous tail 0 in; unused area within consumed length 40 sq in.

Last roll: 3 applications; consumed length 8 in; continuous tail 12 in; unused area within consumed length 36 sq in.

Rotated 90 degrees

Application 4 × 5 in: 3 across × 4 full rows = 12 complete applications per full roll; 2 rolls required.

First roll: 12 applications; consumed length 20 in; continuous tail 0 in; unused area within consumed length 0 sq in.

Last roll: 1 application; consumed length 5 in; continuous tail 15 in; unused area within consumed length 40 sq in.

Exact-fit check: with zero allowance, a 25.4 × 25.4 mm graphic fits a 1 × 1 in piece exactly. A 25.4001 × 25.4 mm graphic does not fit that piece in either orientation. Never round the larger measurement down to claim a fit.
