Frequently Asked Questions About Sign Vinyl
What sign vinyl should I use for vehicle lettering?
Premium cast vinyl is generally preferred for long-term vehicle graphics, compound curves, rivets and corrugations. High-performance calendered vinyl such as Metamark M7 may be appropriate for lettering and graphics on flat or gently curved vehicle surfaces. The film should be selected according to the surface, expected lifespan and manufacturer specifications.
Can sign vinyl be applied over rivets and corrugations?
Yes, but the vinyl must be designed for conformable applications. Premium cast films are generally the best choice for graphics that must conform around rivets, corrugations or complex curves. Standard intermediate vinyl can lift or shrink when used beyond its intended application.
What is the difference between reflective and translucent vinyl?
Reflective vinyl returns light toward its source and is used for safety markings, emergency vehicles, trailers and high-visibility signs. Translucent vinyl allows light to pass through it and is designed for internally illuminated signs, light boxes and backlit graphics.
Can sign vinyl be applied to glass or plastic?
Sign vinyl can be applied to clean, smooth glass and many plastic surfaces. Some plastics contain additives or have low-surface-energy finishes that make adhesion difficult. Test questionable surfaces or ask for a product recommendation before completing a large installation.
How should a surface be prepared before applying sign vinyl?
The surface should be smooth, clean and completely dry. Remove dirt, grease, wax, silicone and other contamination that could interfere with adhesion. Follow the vinyl manufacturer’s preparation and application instructions for the specific surface and film.
Will vinyl colors shown online exactly match the actual material?
Colors displayed on monitors and phones may not precisely match the actual vinyl. A physical manufacturer color chart or material sample is recommended when an exact color match is important. Call 1-800-477-6275 for color-matching assistance and current availability.
Can I still purchase discontinued MACtac colored sign vinyl?
Great Lakes Graphic Supply still has selected discontinued MACtac colored sign vinyl in remaining inventory. Available colors, widths and roll lengths are limited and cannot be reordered after they sell out. Call 1-800-477-6275 to check current stock.
