3M 8170-P40 is a white, high-gloss perforated cast vinyl film for compatible printed window graphics. The film is 4 mil thick before adhesive, with a black reverse side, clear removable pressure-sensitive adhesive and a continuous, non-perforated polyethylene-coated paper liner. Its 40% perforation/open-area pattern allows viewing through the graphic from inside while displaying the printed image outside. The percentage describes the perforation pattern, not guaranteed finished-graphic light transmission.
Use on the exterior face of suitable storefront and building windows, on flat or gently curved surfaces, following current 3M application guidance. Check applicable window regulations before vehicle use. Do not apply to surfaces with anti-reflective or scratch-resistant coatings, heating or defrosting elements, or wipers. Where optically clear viewing is required, 3M requires 8914 overlaminate to reduce impaired viewing when wet. The overlaminate is sold separately and is not included with this roll.
High-opacity or dark printed graphics on strongly sun-exposed glass can cause thermal stress and glass breakage. Review the 3M 8170 Product Bulletin for printing, graphic protection, substrate suitability and installation limitations before use.
Illustrative 3M application: 8170-P40 window graphics with separately sold 8914 overlaminate. Installed example; supplied roll dimensions are not depicted. Overlaminate is not included.

The film-specific 8170 bulletin requires 8914 where optically clear viewing is needed; the newer general vehicle instructions name 8518. These references are not treated as permission to substitute. Before producing a visibility-critical 8170 graphic, obtain 3M confirmation of the exact film, ink, protective layer and window application. The existing 8914 requirement and other restrictions above remain in force.
For any contemplated vehicle installation, the installer must check visibility, local restrictions and emergency-exit operation. Do not use on roll-down windows or rubber gaskets, and retain the coating, defroster and wiper exclusions above. No vehicle-use or finished light-transmission approval is implied.
Use the glass-specific removal procedure: do not use heat-aided removal on glass because it can cause breakage. The linked care and removal instructions must be used together with the exact product and substrate restrictions.
