Craft Vinyl FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Craft Vinyl and HTV

What is the difference between adhesive craft vinyl and heat transfer vinyl?

Adhesive craft vinyl has a pressure-sensitive adhesive and is applied to compatible hard surfaces such as signs, glass, plastic and finished items. Heat transfer vinyl uses heat and pressure to bond a cut design to compatible garments and textiles.

Does heat transfer vinyl need to be cut in reverse?

Most HTV with an attached carrier is mirror-cut so the design reads correctly after pressing. Cutting instructions can vary for printable, patterned and specialty materials, so follow the directions supplied with the exact product.

Is clear grid transfer tape used with heat transfer vinyl?

Clear grid transfer tape is primarily used to position and install compatible adhesive craft vinyl. Most standard HTV is supplied on its own carrier sheet and does not use ordinary adhesive-vinyl transfer tape. Specialty and printable materials may require different transfer products.

Can puff heat transfer vinyl be layered?

Do not assume puff HTV can be layered. Contact us to confirm the exact material, current availability and product-specific layering restrictions before planning the design. The design should be planned so other materials do not interfere with the area that must expand, and the current application instructions supplied with the material must be followed.

Why should puff HTV be test-pressed before production?

Puff height and appearance can change with the product color, garment, heat-press temperature, time and pressure. A test cut and test press help confirm the current settings before decorating a completed garment or producing a large order.

What is Siser StripFlock?

Siser StripFlock is flocked heat-transfer material with a soft, raised, suede-like finish for textured lettering, numbers, logos and decorative apparel. Instructions differ by version; ask us for cutting, pressing, peeling, layering and care directions matched to the supplied sheet, and test on the actual garment before production.

Can heat transfer vinyl be applied to every fabric?

No. Fabric composition, coatings, dyes and heat sensitivity can affect adhesion or cause dye migration. Confirm compatibility and test the actual garment before production, especially with nylon, sublimated polyester, treated fabrics and temperature-sensitive materials.

Can craft vinyl and HTV be purchased in sheets or rolls?

Yes. Selected craft vinyl and heat transfer materials are available in individual sheets, convenient rolls or full production rolls. Additional colors and sizes may be available even when they are not listed online. Call 1-800-477-6275 for current inventory.

Can a craft cutter cut professional sign vinyl and HTV?

Many craft cutters can cut compatible sign vinyl and heat transfer materials when the correct blade, holder, force, speed and cutting mat or roll setup are used. Test-cut the material and confirm that its width and thickness are suitable for the machine.
